The
photographer, Ken Jackson, is a native of the San Francisco Bay
Area. Born in Concord in the East Bay in 1954, the Jackson family
moved to San Jose in 1959 where Ken lived until 1999, relocating
to Sacramento at that time, fleeing the outrageously high housing
costs of the Bay Area.
Ken
Jackson first became interested in photography in 1976. He purchased
his first camera, an Olympus OM-1 manual 35mm SLR, through his
good friend Tim who was in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He
brought the camera with him to the Paul McCartney and Wings concert
at the Cow Palace in San Francisco 1976 to try and capture the
memory of the show. Unfortunately, that show produced no usable
photographs, serving as a learning process of what didn't work
in taking available light photos. But that learning experience
paid off at the next concert, the band Yes at the same venue. Photos from that concert are available here.

In
1978, Ken Jackson began working as a volunteer at an alternative
monthly newspaper in San Jose called Groundswell News. During
his time with the newspaper, Ken polished his photographic skills
while also contributing concert reviews and lifestyle articles.
About this time Ken began selling his concert photographs through
local record stores and specialty shops, as well as college flea
markets. Ken also appeared on a local cable TV show called "Rock
Talk" around this time to showcase his photographs.
Ken
Jackson took photographs of concerts until the mid 1980's when
he became disillusioned with most live performances. "I feel
that I was lucky to be present during the pinnacle of live rock
performances: great music, wonderful visual effects, reasonable
ticket prices all combining for an experience that can never be
matched."
Ken
and Stella, his wife, (mostly Stella as she does the majority
of the work in scanning and prepping the images from slides) are
always updating this site from the roughly 4000 images available
in their archives of slides and negatives.
"Please
drop us an email and say hello. Let us know your fondest concert
memory and you will see your comments here online. Thanks to all
our customers and visitors over the years and enjoy the shows."
